The who and why behind Kathy’s Place

Who is Kathy?

This project was inspired by, and in honor of, Kathy Strade. Kathy never met a person who was not worthy of her love, her smile, her gigantic hugs, her burst of laughter, and her endless generosity. Her home was filled with warmth, the smell of cooking, and hidden treasures for her grandchildren to find.

Her home was always a safe and welcoming place for her family and friends. And we were all friends because, for Kathy, there was no such thing as a stranger. Kathy simply made life better for everyone around her. She is the inspiration for creating a safe, nurturing place for children and families who desperately need a helping hand. Her home was always that place for us. Kathy’s Place means so much more than home, it is a place where you can be the best version of yourself.

Why Single Moms?

The cost of housing in Portland, the cost of childcare, the cost of education, the difficulty in earning a living wage, and the cost to employment prospects when you are the sole caregiver for your family can make it overwhelming for a single parent. The statistics are much worse if you are a woman, a person of color, and if you lack community, resources, and connections. The trauma and emotional toll it takes on every member of the family, and particularly on the children, is incalculable and the cycle can feel nearly impossible to break.

  • According to the 2021 US Census, 31.4% of children in Oregon live in single parent families.
  • The overwhelming majority of these children (80%) live with single moms.
  • Nearly 35% of these children live in poverty, with even higher percentages experienced in families headed by women of color.
  • Working moms continue to earn less than men, earning $0.83 to the $1.00 for the same job.
  • Single mothers often spend more than 50% of their income on housing expenses and more than a 30% on childcare, leaving little or no means to contribute financially to their living expenses or educational objectives.
  • Children growing up in single-parent families typically do not have the same economic or human resources available as those growing up in two-parent families.
  • Compared with children in married-couple families, children raised in single-parent households are more likely to drop out of school, to have or cause a teen pregnancy and to experience a divorce in adulthood.

“In the cycle of poverty, children are born into poverty, live life in poverty, and bear children in poverty. The cycle of poverty is expensive: The cost of each year’s cohort of US children born into poverty is estimated to be $500 billion over their lifetimes”.

We believe that the cycle of poverty CAN be broken, and that single mothers simply need what our inspiration, Kathy, provided for our founders: a community of support, access to resources, and the time and money to accomplish their dreams.

Why Hummingbirds?

The hummingbird is the perfect logo to represent Kathy’s Place, and single moms everywhere. Hummingbirds have a rich spiritual symbolism and meaning across cultures. They are a symbol of courage, agility, resilience, diversity, good luck, healing, beauty and joy. Hummingbirds are known to be small but mighty birds with the “heart of an eagle”. They are fiercely territorial, able to stabilize themselves in the strongest of winds, and fly great distances.

Our first project, The Calliope, is a hummingbird named after the muse of eloquence and epic poetry, who inspired Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey.

We celebrate the value of all people. We will engage in a culturally responsive manner and embrace a community that reflects diversity, equity, and inclusion.
